The Community Visitors Pilot Project

This pilot has now commenced. The aim of the Community Visitors pilot is to explore the potential for volunteers to work with care homes on a regular basis, not just to befriend individual residents or help with specific activities, but to be allies to the whole Care Home community – all those that live in, work in or visit care homes or take an interest in their well being.

Recruitment of volunteers to act as Community Visitors is in progress and we hope these specially selected and trained individuals will be able to support both the work of managers and staff and others within the care home to give the best possible service and also to help improve the integration of the home with its surrounding community.

The pilot has started in three care homes and should take about 15 months before the final evaluation report is available. We are lucky enough to have the enthusiastic support of staff at Essex University and, providing that we can secure the funds (at the time of writing we are optimistic) they will be undertaking the independent evaluation. We also have the explicit support of the CQC, who will be watching with interest.
