Help us to support good care all year round

Published on

Good Care Week is an opportunity to celebrate the great people who are providing excellent care for older people in residential homes across the country.

The My Home Life Essex Community Association is proud to support the My Home Life movement in Essex which is ‘raising the bar’ for residents in the county by working closely with home managers to provide a better quality of life for potentially vulnerable members of our communities.

We’d like to invite you to join our friendly team to help us to continue our vital work so if you’re thinking about what you might be able to do for people in your neighbourhood then look no further! We’re seeking people who care about others and want to put their talents to good use. It doesn’t matter if you have no experience of working with older people, if you’d like to make a difference that’s enough. We support residents, their families and carers, and care home teams and here’s what we’re doing to help:

Community Visitors

Our Community Visitors are friends of a care home in their neighbourhood. These volunteers get to know the residents and care staff and help in a number of ways. This might be chatting with residents, supporting new residents as they settle in and helping families to feel included. The Community Visitors are an independent set of eyes and ears that can help build on what is good and change what could be better.

Reaching out to communities

We’re creating links with local communities and looking for volunteers to help us to make connections. You can get involved by sharing your skills to help residents to maintain their interests and hobbies, which could be knitting, playing cards or following their favourite football team. Maybe you’d like to befriend a resident, help to run activities or just chat with people. Also, you may belong to or know of local groups that could bring a ray of sunshine into residents’ lives.

Independent advice line

We offer a telephone advice line and support for older people, their families and carers who are looking at options for care and we do this in partnership with Independent Age, a national charity which provides an expert information service. The advice line number is 0845 017 7720 if you have any questions about care issues.

Help us to spread the news

You can help us to spread the news about the My Home Life Essex Community Association in your area by distributing posters and leaflets in GP surgeries, village halls and other community venues so that people get to hear about us. You may have other ideas about how we can let people know about the advice line and our other work, if so, please let us know as we’re looking for ways to connect with communities.

Please contact our Development Officer Debbie Tanner if you’d like to arrange a friendly chat about volunteering opportunities and we look forward to welcoming you as a member of My Home Life Essex Community Association.
