The My Home Life Essex Community Association is seeking volunteers who want to make a difference to the lives of people living in care homes in Essex.

Then look no further! The My Home Life Essex Community Association is seeking volunteers who want to make a difference to the lives of people living in care homes in Essex. In particular we are offering you the opportunity to become a Community Visitor and get involved in an exciting pilot project that is already making a positive impact in the Colchester area. So if you can spare about half a day each week please let us tell you more:

Community Visitors are unpaid volunteers who work with a ‘buddy’ to support a care home to provide the best quality of life for its residents, according to individual needs and preferences. You’ll be acting as a friend to the residents, their families, their carers and the home manager, offering an independent set of eyes and ears to help the home build on its strengths and change what could be better. You’ll enjoy getting to know the people living in the home and chatting with them to find out what matters to them and becoming a familiar and dependable face.

You do not need to have a background in the care sector as we’re interested in hearing about your life experiences and what you could bring to the role. You may be surprised at what you can offer so why not contact us for a chat and we can tell you more about the Community Visitors and answer any questions you have.

If the Community Visitor role does not appeal to you we have other volunteering opportunities for you to consider:

  • Helping us to publicise our advice line – we provide a professional telephone advice line, in partnership with Independent Age , and personal support for prospective residents and their families when they are facing choices about residential care
  • Befriending residents in local care homes, particularly those who have no family or regular visitors
  • Helping us to ensure that care home residents and their local communities are ‘in touch’ and utilising their talents for everyone’s benefit. For example if you passionate about gardening, knitting or singing and would like to share your skills or you belong to a club or group that would like to make a link with your local care home

The My Home Life Essex Community Association is part of My Home Life Essex which is part a national movement which is changing the lives of people who live in, work in or visit care homes for older people. Volunteers’ Week runs from 1 to 7 June 2013 so why not try something new and make a difference to your life and those of others?
