Out came the posh frocks and fancy hats for a fun ‘Day at the Races’ at Corner Lodge residential care home in Jaywick.
It was one of the Silver Sunday activities taking place across the UK to celebrate older people and the value and knowledge they contribute to our communities. In Essex we’re spreading the enjoyment throughout October so take a look at what’s planned elsewhere too.
Corner Lodge wanted to make sure that they enjoyed a day to remember and so they invited everyone to come to the races, have a flutter and a good laugh. The ladies made themselves special hats to wear so there was hot competition to create that head-turning masterpiece. Their families and carers also joined in the fun by coming dressed in their finest and looking the part for a posh day out.
One of the residents told us:
We had a great time and I really enjoyed myself. I was quite hoarse from shouting although I only managed to back one winner. I hope we do it again sometime.
Milli Simalova, the manager of Corner Lodge, explained:
Everyone was given chips to bet with and we had lots of bets placed on all of the races. It got very noisy and it was lovely to see the residents and their families enjoying themselves. We awarded prizes at the end for the residents who had backed and won most money. It was great to see how such simple idea created so much fun and brought people together.
I was also pleased that we were supported by Ethna Harbrow from the My Home Life Essex Community Association as she shares our passion for excellent care for older people living in residential care homes. We’re proud of the high standard of care that we provide and a big part of this is ensuring that our residents can participate in a variety of activities and enjoy life to the full.
