In October 2011 the Community Dietetic Team based at Essex County Hospital and Clacton District Hospital launched the Food First Project.

This project aimed to reduce the risk of malnutrition in care and nursing homes in North East Essex and provide care homes and their staff with valuable information and support where needed.

Care homes were provided with a Food First Pack which included detailed information about preventing malnutrition, high calorie recipes and included a care plan which staff could follow if they were concerned.

We have had an excellent response to this project with many care homes promoting this within their setting, adapting menu’s promoting health and good nutrition for their residents and increasing their staff’s awareness of the issue.

We also regularly distributed newsletters and information sheets to care and nursing homes, community matrons, District nurses and the Care Quality Commission, that work within our area. These newsletters provide a wealth of information to staff alongside high calorie recipes. We were also delighted to be able to “Highlight Area’s of Good Practice” that we saw during our visits.

We have been working alongside the My Home Life organisation for two years, who were happy to feature, all of our projects and information that we produce on this website.

We have continued to grow as a team, whilst promoting and developing the Food First Project further. In February 2014 we held a number of study days for Care and Nursing Homes in North East Essex. The response and attendance was astounding, with nutrition being at the forefront for many homes.

During these sessions we launched the updated version of the Food First Pack, which is featured on this web page.

The community dietetic team also now has an information page on Colchester Hospital University NHS Foundation Trusts website, where all information from study days will be featured. To access this page, care and nursing homes require a password, please contact our department if you require it.
